About Prevention of Tooth Decay

Dental health is a matter of life-long concern. Whatever your age, you can and should have a healthy mouth and a pleasant smile. Your dental health is an important part of your general health. Correct dental care can help you keep your teeth for a life time.

A healthy tooth is strong and clean, with solid bones and sound gums, and free from cavities and decay.

The common diseases of the teeth are a result of irregular and inadequate cleaning habits.

Tooth decay occurs when food particles, especially sugary food are left sticking to the teeth. Bacteria turns these food particles into acid which eats its way into the enamel, then into the dentine and then the pulp. When this stage is reached, it becomes painful and the tooth may have to be pulled out.

Inadequate cleaning also leads to Gingivitis or gum diseases. Food particles left sticking to the teeth harden around the gum line and form tarter. This causes inflammation of the gums. This infection then spreads to the bone that supports the tooth, and eventually the tooth may fall out. This is called Periodontal disease or Pyorrhoea. Pus may also form which may find its way through the end of the root and into the jaw bone to form a gum boil.

These diseases can be prevented by regular and proper brushing, especially at night before going to bed. This will remove plaque and food particles from the crevices of the teeth. It is very important to avoid having sweet or sticky food , especially between meals. Eat crunchy foods like apples and carrots, and food that is rich in minerals and vitamins.

Regular visits to the dentist, at least twice a year for a routine checkup are necessary. Timely detection of cavities, removal of tarter and general advice can save your teeth from decay.

Bleeding gums, unpleasant breath, painful sensation or flabby gums should be taken seriously and proper treatment sought at the right time. A professional cleaning of your teeth by the dentist every six months is necessary for maintaining clean and healthy teeth.

You may sometimes use mouth-wash to freshen your breath. However, remember that a mouthwash will not remove plaque or prevent tooth decay and gum diseases.
